Laminated List is a mass participation Live Art work exploring desire in the 21st century: its place within the spectrum of pride, openness, shame and secrecy; its mediation by pop culture, its emancipatory potential.
Audre Lorde argued that “recognizing the power of the erotic within our lives can give us the energy to pursue genuine change within our world”. In a durational performance subverting the moralistic Catholic rituals of my heritage, I will craft an intimate one-on-one encounter inviting audiences to explore their relationship with their own erotics by sharing the five public figures, alive or dead, who they most desire. These lists will then be typewritten, signed, laminated and displayed on the walls of the space, growing throughout the performance to become a playful, fascinating and entertaining collective portrait of contemporary desires.
Laminated List has been gestating for over a decade, initially as an anthropological study of over 100 friends and strangers. The concept originated in the 90s sitcom FRIENDS, as a list of 5 celebrities you could have a free pass to sleep with, without repercussions. Here it’s a list of 5 public figures, alive or dead, who you most desire on this date. In creating this work I aim to offer a corrective to the current climate of regressive sexual politics - of Andrew Tate, trans panic and tradwives - with this fiercely feminist, sex-positive performance, rooted in pleasure activism and radical joy.
I’m interested in complicating our understanding of how desire works and its relationship to sexuality, as well as exploring the role of celebrity crushes in defining identity and navigating the fraught nature of the erotic.
An early version of the work was shown at Fandom curated by Bad Art, at London Art Services, Deptford in September 2025.
